Let's see: it won't eat or drink, resperation and heart rate go up as well has having a fever, acts lethargic, eyes look dull and have a discharge that is yellow or green, nose runs yellow or green discharge, and if it's colic it will bite at it's sides or objects and roll to try and ease the pain. They will also cough like people due, but they can't throw up because of the stucture of the stomach and esophagas.

If you know your horse well enough, it is easy to detect changes in his/her behavior that might make you think something isn't quite right. If the horse isn't eating something is wrong, so that's usually the best indicator, but horses will not allow themselves to starve so they often eat right on through any pain or illness. Watch for things like pawing or nipping at the stomach area, dull eyes, lifelessness, lots of rolling, fever, yellow or green nasal drainage (clear is normal) and diarrhea. If you notice any of these symptoms, it's best to call your vet before things get out of hand.
