I suggest getting professional snowboarding lessons. They're worth what you pay, & they'll teach you all of the basics & more. I also recommend going to a store that sells snowboarding gear & getting recommendations from them. But my favourite brands of gear is Lamar, Burton, Dragon, K2, & Roxy.

Good luck!

If your going to rent your gear: Get it at a board shop that is off the mountain so the sales staff has time to set the deck up to fit your stance. Don't let them just hand you a board, bindings and boots and ring you up. You will

If your going to buy gear: Find a good sales rep who really boards and knows the product lines and the questions about how you plan to use the equipment.

The "best equipment" is very subjective and changes with the conditions of the day and your abilities as a rider. Talk to the shop guys.

My All-Mountain/Powder set up is:
2006 Burton Baron 172
2003 P1HD Bindings
2003 Vans Boots

My Park set up is:
2003 Burton Canyon 168
2006 Mission Bindings
2006 Vans Boots

My other gear:
Giro - Bad Lieutenant Helmet
Burton - Wrist Guards
Dragon - Goggles
686 - Jacket and Pants
Outdoor Research - Gloves
Marmot - Base layer
Camel Pack - Hellion

Tahoe Dave's In Tahoe City is the best board shop I have found.
Santa Rosa Ski and Sport is a good shop too. They have more Gear than Tahoe Dave's but the staff at Dave's ride every day there is snow and they know their gear and the questions to ask to get you in the right equipment.

A beginner does NOT need the best equipment by any means. the slopes are full of kids with all the gear and have never stepped foot on a snowboard. The best gear will not make you the best rider. I suggest borrowing one or begging for a friend's old deck. If you plan on learning how to snowboard, learn how to fall it is very important. falling is an art and you will learn how to do it.

ski or winter socks, long underwear, snowpants that will be good to sit on the ground in, a jacket that goes long enough to cover halfway down your butt, gloves, rent a helmet, buy goggles or wear cheap sunglasses but those aren't as warm, rent boots and a board, wear sunscreen and bring chapstick, thats probably all you need
