Huh?... do you mean "what's the difference between starboard and port sides"?

In antiquity, the steering oar was always on the right side of the boat, so that became the "steer board side' of the boat. When the boat came into port, it was turned (to protect the steering oar) so the left side of the boat was against the wall of the dock... so the left side became known as the "port side" because that was the side used when the ship was in "port".

Hi there!
Here's how it begun;
Old boats didn't have keels, so a plank or board was fixed to one side of the boat to prevent it from sliding laterally across the water when under sail.

These planks became know as steering boards because of the job they did (not to be confused with the rudder steering) and they were mostly fixed to the right hand side of the boat.

To protect the boards from damage, the vessels would berth with the opposite side alongside the dock.

Steering board became starboard when spoken and the left hand side became port side because it was the side that was always alongside the port (or dock).

When boats were eventually built with keels and the steering board was obsolete, the men who sailed still referred to right and left side in the same manner. Hence Starboard and Port.

Best regards,
Geoff

Between the starboard side and WHAT? A 1991 Buick LeSabre? A grilled cheese sandwich?

Fill in the rest of the question. You have essentially asked "What is the sum of 7 and ?"

In olden days when boats had the steering mechanism on the right side, they had to go up to the dock in port with the left side of the boat. So the left became port and the steering board became starboard or right.
