I really need my college papers off it! If that won't work, do you have other suggestions?

The screen is unviewable so I don't think that would work unless I could somehow show the screen on another comp which I don't know how to do.

You need to find you a good computer geek. I toasted my motherboard, and my son-in-law pulled the hard drive and downloaded my files from it using his computer.

I don't have a clue how to do it, but check around with people you know. I'm sure there will be someone who knows how to salvage your files.

if they are same make and around the same model then they should work. like if you had a Dell C600 and wanted to put the Hard Drive in a C610 then yes it would work. However if you put it in a HP or different models like a Dell C400 then no it will not work. you would probably see a blue screen at start up as you would need new drivers for the OS and other controlers like mouse and such.

But as already stated you could slave it to another unit and pull the files off that way,

You can, but should only do it as a second drive if the laptop will support that. Otherwise, go pick up a ied to usb drive kit ($20-$30) and connect the drive using a USB port. This will allow you to get your files AND provide you with a nice portable drive.
