From the perspective that I believe you are asking this question - yes, extra-curricular activities 'can' affect academic performance however; negatively to the person who is undisciplined, cannot manage their time, and is immature in the ways of getting things done by priortizing. As a teacher, I have middle school students who suffer this on a daily basis. The basketball player, the cheerleader, the forensic team member, the band and choir, orchestra, dance, all these extra activities within school have a negative affect on the kids who can't handle both. It is worse for those who have outside activities such as football, soccer, dance, etc. For some reason, parents and their kids don't get this right from the onstart. We have parents who want their kids to be professionals in sports and begin the preparation in middle school. And when a teacher attempts to give homework, or projects - we get all kinds of rejection and moaning from parents and kids. They complain that they have too much on their plates. Well, I am old school. My mother taught me that my "job" was to be a student and a darn good one - because "C"'s were not allowed in my home. I didn't have to work, didn't have to worry about clothing and food - all I was supposed to do was study and make good grades - and IF my music, piano lessons or anything else got in the way of that - the extra went out the door - not the schoolwork! So, that gave me incentive to make sure I got it 'all' done. It's all a matter ot measuring what you have to do and allow ample time to get it all done. If there is something consuming more of your time than you can spare - then it might have to take a back seat until a later date.
