You need ventilation in the room when you burn a kerosene heater. If your seeing black suet on everything then your breathing it in also. DON'T, It's NOT safe. You should only use kerosene heaters which are approved for indoor use and are smokeless and vent-less. If that's what you have then you have an air fuel mixture problem, a wick problem or low quality kerosene.

Something's wrong with your kero heater. I have two of them going right now and I have no soot, no smoke, no smell. I use k-1 kersoene. Sounds like (if you have the indoor use kind) that you might have the glass/globe off center and it's not aligned right, and like everyone else has mentioned.....check the wick.
If you don't find an answer to this question, I'd find a different way to heat my house. You'll end up with carbon dioxide poisoning, watch for dizziness, heacache, nausea. if you have any of those symptoms get rid of the heater, get it fixed or get out of the house before you do go to sleep and not wake up.
That happens too often because people don't know what to look for.

How old is the heater? You may need to trim the wick or replace it. You could first try letting all of the fuel burn out instead of shutting the heater off. This helps clean the wick.

Be careful... these things are not meant for long term use indoors. You will fall asleep and never wake up.

You might try replacing the wick (they smoke more when they wear out)

Also there grades of 1-K that are more highly refined, but are expensive.

you may have the wick turned up too high, lower the setting after you light the heater. or your wick may need replacing. don't use until you solve this problem especially while you are sleep -- very dangerous.
