they do it in hopes that no one actually looks at their "ideas" and realizes, "hey, this other guy might be bad, but the guy insulting him is even worse"

It's easier to criticize than form a plan, even if it's a bad plan.
I am a moderate republican, and I have to say that I am glad to hear some ideas from the democrats this time.
Universal health care, taking profits from oil companies to fund alternative energy research, pulling out of Iraq.
I am not saying I agree with the ideas, but at least they are ideas.
Now we have to wait and see if they can come up with a solid plan in accomplishing these goals or if they are just blowing smoke.

If they point a finger at an others short comings( real or made up),it takes the microscope off of them for a few moments. Its a distraction that they hope will take the spotlight off the issues and cause their opponent's to begin defending him/her self, thus causing them to lose ground.

Haven't you heard the adage, " You make yourself look better by tearing other people down"? The rhetoric is all the same. The politicians that speak from their hearts and stand firm on issues are ripped apart. We , the people have accepted this practice and by voting for these folks continue to perpetuate the circus atmosphere.

I agree with you, but I guess they believe the best defense is a good offense. In other words, they put down their opponents to draw attention away from their own faults.

the political blame game is much easier than accepting resposibilities. talk is a lot cheaper than actions, and as politicians, they criticize what they don't really know. politicians don't like to make promises, because unfortunate events and unforseen trivial matters cloud their ability to keep promises once they are in office.
the less the public knows about them, the less criticism they are asking for. political offices are just like jobs, they are not thinking about protecting the integrity of their constituens, they are worried about protecting their way of life. thats why no one can trust them.

That was why John Kerry didn't win. He could tell you why Bush sucked, but he couldn't tell you why he didn't suck. I'm starting to believe the statement "Republicans - the party with bad ideas. Democrats - the party with no ideas".

Because they don't have a platform that is different from their opponent's.
