Hi
I have now introduced the female to the male simese fighter she has been with him over 24 hours he is still just playing tag with her and at times they are peaceful, now she has lost her colour and her stripes have appeared, is this because she is stressed or ready to mate? the temp is 82 and she is so fat with eggs, but he just won't do the nest building, there are plenty of plants for hiding, and the water level is reduced, please help!!!

DO NOT PUT MARBLES OR GRAVEL IN THE TANK.

Try floating a small plastic lid or a Styrofoam cup that has been cut in half on top of the water. the Male's like to build there bubble nest under some kind of cover.

Unlike others who have answered your question I will assume that you have read up on the subject and know that you will be dealing with quite a few small containers and water changes once the fry are older.
If there are no results in a few days remove the female and let her rest. Dont worry if she is carrying eggs she will pass them on her own and most likely eat them.
You should wait at least 6 weeks before trying again, just make sure you condition your fish properly before you try again. (make sure that you let them see each other but that they are kept separate until the male has started a nest.)

Hope this helps
Eric

You need to wait until after the nest is built before you introduce them. He won't have a mind for building a nest when there is a female right there with him. Some males just aren't cut out for breeding and won't make a nest. Remove her for a while. If the stripes are horizontal its for stress, vertical for breeding.

You should of looked all this stuff up before you even bought the fish, I hope they aren't from a pet store but are from an actual betta breeder. If the male hasn't even built a bubble nest why did you put the female in with him? Did you condition them both for at least a week with high protein foods? Which way are the stripes on the female? If you would of done some research then you should know what the stripes mean. Separate the fish and learn what needs to be done to successfully breed bettas. You do have tons of containers for all the males you will have right? Do you know what you are going to do with hundreds of bettas?

... I have no idea what the people are talking aobut her laying her eggs. she doens't. the male squeezes them out of her and fertilizes them as they come out. if there is ANYTHING on the bottom such as marbles or rocks the eggs will rot and die. the male needs to be able to find and reach the eggs once they have fallen to put in his nest.

seeing as you knew he needs a nest I assume YOU at least know that. however, you should not have but the female in until he had built a bubble nest. put her in a breeder net so he can see her but can't have her until he builds a nest, then put her in with him.

she may be stressed and he may kill her. If he hasn't built a nest he is not ready to breed. Get her out of the tank ASAP before he kills her then do some flipping research before trying to breed them.

the process could take a week or more. divide them up where they can see each other and hopefully he should start nesting.

ok everything so far is perfect but you need to line the bottom of the tank with marbles you need about 2 layers. this is because when she lays her eggs they will fall through the gaps and they will have a better chance of serviving. she wont lay her eggs till she knows they will be safe.
