Many things are great about it and many things are not so great about it
The great things:
1. It's mostly Free (it's free to download but it has ownership costs, from a business point of view).
2. It's open source. Anyone who knows what their doing can look at the code and make it better.
3. It's secure. Security is a major factor for companies and some home users. If a bug or flaw is found in a piece of linux software someone from the community or the maintainer of a specific piece of software can fix the flaw and have an updated posted as soon as possible. It was also built with security in mind.
4. It has a lower total cost of ownership than priority operationg systems like windows.
5. It runs great on old computers.
The not so great.
1. It is not as user friendly as windows, when you need to update or fix something.
2. Most of the good software is written for windows. Some Linux software packages are much better than windows equivalents but in very few instances
3. Most Directx 9.0 games won't work in Linux because Directx is a Microsoft product. There are emulators but htey are crap. Opengl games can work on Linux.
4. Some hardware manufacturers don't release drivers for linux.
I use both Windows and Linux. Both have their advantages but most people will stay with windows because of the user friendliness.
I am no expert Ubuntu is very good for older PC's and it's not as bloated as some other Linux distributions. In my opinion Ubuntu will be fine for starters.

Linux is an open sourced OS as opposed to Windows which is proprietary. Since linux is open sourced people can create their own distrobutions of it. Since people could find bugs before they happen bugs are more easily found and fixed in a faster time than windows. Linux is also way more customizable in which with most desktops you can customize the whole desktop. Linux is more stable, there is no blue screen of death. Linux runs on free open sourced software.

I wouldn't really say great. It's better than Windows of course but not by the lightyear margin claimed by some, and I'm pretty sure we can prove mathematically that there cannot exist a more flawed OS than Windows(and Vista changes...ohhh...NOTHING)
I suggest you get a new Mac with the newest OS-X, then get this neat tool called Parallels and run Windows and Linux on VMs. The virtualisation is actually pretty good.
Hope this helps!

There are many answers to this, I will give you one: Avoidance from lock-in. Because the source code is open, and legally modifiable and redistributable by anyone, if your vendor goes bankrupt or decides to stop supporting a certain version of software you are using, someone else can always jump in and maintain the software. I've seen products developed by one individual or company have their control transferred to an individual in the community or another company many times.
