You pay for what you get ------ I have cable (computer only) SuddenLink($39.95) 4,000 kb/s down 512 kb/s up My bench checks show similar results. For mulitiple downloads--several movies/music at same time ,plus streaming videos -- it"s great. Plus I use Skype voip and my voice is better than a regular telephone, and conference calls are very clear , as well as video calls. With a higher speed connection -- your downloads come in much faster -- much less waiting / loss time. This makes the entire "internet experience" so very much more pleasant, and smooth. With a "well tuned computer", and a good broad band high speed connection --- you"ll forget about ever going back to anything slower. Get the best , fastest internet connection you can afford. Remember these points ---- DSL is distance senitive from the transmission source --- what this means is the farther away you live -- the less "speed" you will get. These "up to " speed rates are just that >> You probable will never get that full rate because of "distance", and number of customers using the net at the same time --- late/late at night would be the best time I would think. Are you a online game player ?? Your internet connection rate will greatly effect the pleasure in playing these games. The speed will "make or break" many of the good games out there.

Little known fact but BT can't actually monitor your usage so although they have different packages i.e. 2GB/month up to 40GB/month etc they are actually all the same.

Only found that out myself after taking out their 40GB package but when it comes time to renew it......

Explains why they can't give you any tools to monitor your usage so you could cut down if you were near your limit, they have no idea themselves.

I pay £9.99 pm for 2 meg broadband with NTL. I don't know if that's cheap or not. I don't recommend them for Customer Services though. They suck.

You also need to find out which ISP operates in your area, hence I suggest you use a specialist search engine to find out the most cost effective supplier in your area. Here is a good site to start your investigation: http://www.simplyswitch.com/
