The above answer was correct but the super sub rule has been abandoned as it provided the the team batting second a huge advantage.
The second team to bat subbed out one of its bowlers for an extra batsman. While the team batting first was often forced to keep its orriginal eleven players.

Super sub rule is has been scrapped and no more used. As per Super Sub Rule each team can name 12 players and one player can be replaced during the course of the match. The player who has been replaced by a super sub cannot play that match after effecting the replacement.

THE SUPER SUB: Each team designates a 12th man before the toss, who can be subbed to bat or bowl at any stage of the match. The substitution will be announced over the PA system and details of the change shown on the giant screen. Once the 12th man is in play, the man he replaced cannot return to bat or bowl. Both players will receive a cap.

under experimental one-day international rules introduced in July 2005, any player may be substituted for the twelfth man, with the substitute able to take over the substituted players batting and bowling duties. A twelfth man used as a substitute in this way is known as the supersub. The first supersub was Vikram Solanki, named as a supersub for Simon Jones at Headingley on 7 July 2005. However, as Solanki replaced Jones after England had bowled, and England only lost one wicket in chasing down Australia's target, Solanki did not get to play any part in the game. The ICC cancelled the experiment in February 2006.

Both sides will be allowed one substitute. He must be nominated before the toss and can be brought on to replace any member of the starting line-up at any stage during the match.

The substitute can bowl the remaining overs of the player he has replaced and he can also take over from a batsman before, during and after he has batted - although the latter option will only come into play if the side are fielding second. The captain can also be replaced, providing an alternative skipper is named. Rotation od substitutes is not allowed and the substitution can be done only once by a team during a match.
