There is "weight" on the moon. Since the moon is less massive than the Earth, it has weaker gravity, but still plenty to keep people, rocks, spacecraft and whatever else down.

Recall the classic demonstration of an astronaut dropping a hammer and a feather on the moon. Both fell to the ground at the same rate (no atmospheric drag to slow the feather, but still plenty of gravity to do the job).

The weight of a boot or spacesuit has nothing to do with its ability to hold anything to the surface. They are strong and heavy enough to do the job in a hostile environment. Clothes fit the task -- just as a lifeguard's clothing is lighter than a fire fighter's.

Because they let you make "Giant Steps". The moon has gravity about a sixth of the Earth so you have weight, just less of it. Big boots help with additional weight and going through the dust.
