Basic Input Output system. It is a layer of 'firmware' (something between software and hardware) that is used to perform basic operations on your computer, such as defining the links between keyboards, mice, hard drive and monitors that translates data from your operating system to the devices.

(bī´Ås) Acronym for basic input/output system, the built-in software that determines what a computer can do without accessing programs from a disk. On PCs, the BIOS contains all the code required to control the keyboard, display screen, disk drives, serial communications, and a number of miscellaneous functions.
The BIOS is typically placed in a ROM chip that comes with the computer (it is often called a ROM BIOS).

BIOS = Basic Input Output System
Its the software that tells the computer how to interact with the hardware devices in the computer. This is in ROM (or more oftem, an EPROM) and in most computers today, also defines other parameters such as allowing you to detect if the computer case has been opened, what the internal tempurature is, and even virus protection.
