Have run all types of cleanwear programs over and over again, all the spy, anti spam, anti virus , utilities tools, defragmentation, 60% free disk space, Pentium 4, 2.5 GhZ, ram 248, Windows xp. Have tried everything possible plus everything everyone else has tried, no joy. I don`t seem to accept that a computer can decrease so rapidly just after putting it through the internet a few times with so much space available. Does this really justify buying an upgrade?

Well, the very first thing I would do, to add speed to my computer is get above that 248mb of ram..
Most programs today WILL run on that little bit of ram, which, of course, is actually 256, but, since the stingy buzzards are making you share your system memory with your video memory, it's slowing you down.
Even another 256 would help you somewhat.
Good luck..
PS.. With RAM, the more ram, the more speed.. up to the max your system will handle.

If I am reading this correctly you don't have much RAM to play with. Also do what I do and keep a piece of paper by your computer with the amount of free bytes written on it. when I see a big drop in mine I start to look for something other than the normal spy ware, virus stuff as that is monitored and ran continuously. also there will always be old files that are unlinked and the only way to really clean the disk completely is to format it which will give you an amazine gain in free space but the newer computers are getting harder and harder to do this as they are cutting costs by not supplying the disks and going to Raid configurations. Try adding RAM first as that won't cost you a fortune.
