It was switched two years ago when they held the draft lottery on WWE. Raw, with the first pick, selected John Cena, then-WWE Champion (has since won it two more times and holds it now). This left SmackDown! without a world champion. There was a match to determine a new champion but was changed to Number 1 contender once SmackDown! selected Batista, then-World Heavyweight Champion (lost it after being injured and won it back late last year) with the last pick in the lottery.

John Cena defeated JBL at WrestleMania 21 when Cena was still on Smackdown. Cena went to RAW with the Title. Batista who defeated Triple H at the same event later ended up drafted to Smackdown as the World Champion.

batista was drafted to smackdown and cena was drafted to raw which was a very big mistake. raw was just fine until cena was drafted there.
