a high school freshman is someone who is in 9th grade.
a high school sophomore is in 10th grade.
a high school junior is in 11th grade.
a high school senior is in 12th grade.

In the US, there are 4 years of high school (9-12).

a freshman is in their first year of an academic endeavor (usually high school or undergrad in college.
sophomores are in their second year of an academic endeavor.
juniors are in their third year of an academic endeavor.
seniors are in their fourth and final year of an academic endeavor.
