Everyone has different facial hair. I shave downwards, then upwards, then to the side, and then to the other side for a smooth shave. I have never been able to use an electric shaver because it doesn't work.

It's funny I see a question like this right after talking with a buddy of mine about that very thing. Since I started shaving I won't say how many years that's been.. my whiskers grow in different directions. I find it easier to shave against the grain so to speak.
under the chin I have to shave sideways if you can believe that.. around my cheeks I have to shave upwards. I have always been told you never shave against the whiskers, but I never get a close shave that way.

For a closer shave always shave up. This is against the grain. If your skin is sensitive or rough it will be easier to shave down but your shave will not be as close. Never move a safety blade sideways across your skin and do not rush shaving. Cuts are often a result of a blunt, dirty or rusted blade. Remember to wash your face with warm water before shaving. This raises the follicles and allows for a closer shave.

Shave whichever direction is more comfortable for you. I use a blade, so I shave downwards, starting at my sideburns and over my chin. I find that I get less razor burn and fewer cuts, plus a very smooth shave that way. But I have friends who shave "up" and claim they get just as smooth a shave. Try one, try the other, then choose which way is best for you. Or you could be an iconoclast and shave sideways!

First I shave down, but hairs grow in different directions, so to get that baby-butt smooth I end up shaving in all directions. It doesn't hurt anything.

I'd do down first round and then up.
