what is the best and cheapest canister filter. i was thinking the rena filstar xp3.

The cheapest are not usually the best! I always use the Fluval range of external filter. They are very easy to maintain, as they have water shut off valves & a good priming system. The media is contained in a number of baskets, ( Along with a massive sponge filter ) You can fill these with various types of media.) Sufficient sintered ceramic media is supplied with the filter, & spare parts are easy to get. Highly recommended!

Best and cheap really dont go good together. I personally use Fluval. I own 5(3- 404/1- 104/1- FX5). I would suggest looking online or ebay for a 404(new model out, so their at bargain prices).I've never used Rena. Ehiem supposed to be top notch also. There is a new brand(Via-aqua) you can find for around $60,but never used. If looking to save money, I would go with 2 HOB's(Emporer 400 or Penguin 330/350). They would actually move more water than 1 canister, and are much easier to maintain. Every tank I run a canister on, has an HOB in unison.Dont underestimate good HOB's.

renas have little biological filtration, the eheim classic and fluval multistage are good. If you print off an online add for say petsmart and have them match it in the store you will save tons. I know somebody who got a $126 filter for $77 with a price match.

The filtstar xp3 is good
How big is your tank? And is is salt or fresh water? You can beat most store prices from kensfish.com
Even including his shipping you can beat any store price. I am not trying to advertise for anyone, this is from personal experience....he is cheap, honest and prompt in his business.
