I assume you mean Sputnik 1 --there were many, at least 41-- it did not crash, but burned as it reentered the atmosphere in January 1958. NASA has a page about Sputnik 1, but the wikipedia entry is rather more complete.

There were several sputniks. Number 11, for example, landed in Kazakhstan (about 26 km southwest of Engels) in April 1961.

You're probably referring to Sputnik IV (what was left of it), which crashed in Manitowoc, Wisconsin, on September 5, 1962.

To my knowledge, Sputnik never de-orbited. It's still parked around the Earth, along with about 3,000 (yes, 3,000!) other objects of "space junk." There are things as small as screw drivers and bolts all the way up to "dead" radio communication satellites as big as a house. Time to start a clearance program, NASA!
