Its a little about both. Without the entertainment factor, soccer in the US will never become a major spectator sport, and if that doesnt happen it will mean the sport never really progresses in an important market. Soccer just doesn't have the history or tradition in the US that exists elsewhere in the the world, so it needs the razzamataz to attract people to watch. And , sure, Beckham is part of that. The eventual improvement in the standard of play amongst American born players will come as a result of all that.
But its totally wrong to suggest its a "joke"..the standard is probably equal to the Championship in England, not the best but not bad at all. The US national team has done generally ok in the last twenty years. and more and more American players now play at the highest level all over Europe. And hey, people get excitced about Beckham where ever he goes in the world..he's probably the biggest name to play in the US since Pele, Beckenbaur and Cryuff way back in the '70s! And remember..he was captain of England at the World Cup just seven months ago, so he aint exactly a complete has-been.

American soccer is right where it needs to be with attendance on the rise the last 6 years. The national team is as popular as ever with more interest in the world cup than ever before. I dread the day when soccer gets too big. It's great to be able to buy tickets for any game at face value. Europe's greatest sporting fear should be an America that embraces soccer. As for Beckham, the interest was shown because of the popularity England gave him.

The English perception of Americans playing football is not a good one. We really do not take you guys seriously at all, however, we do get some Americans doing quite well in the premiership but non have turned out to be better than homegrown English, European, South-American, African, Australian, Asian, Russian, or Icelandic players.
America is the only country in the world to host a world series where non of the rest of the world is invited to compete! Beckhams move to America is to raise the profile of football in America to Americans. The average attendances and the stadiums that are used for the games are equivalent to English 2nd division, it is hoped that beckham can pull in bigger audiences and TV networks resulting in more money. I'm just glad he's left Europe, He and his wife are Americas problem now!

You have to remember that the MLS is only a little over 10 years old. The English leagues have been around for much longer than that. Football in America is growing in popularity; we just have to give it time. As it stands right now; yes, the MLS is a joke. Just about a year ago Columbus Crew came and played against my uni (UCSB). Horrible display of football to say the least. We tied only because many of our key players were injured. But as a whole, I think the MLS is getting better.

you europeans were the ones who went mad, acually. it wasn't that big of a story over here because most of us don't watch soccer. if it wasn't for the fact that i spend so much time on yahoo answers(a good and bad thing) i probably wouldn't know anything about it. i mean, i would have heard it reported on ESPN of course, but it would have gone in one ear and out of the other.
@anchor cranker: your theory that SOCCER is not popular here just because there are no breaks for commercials doesn't hold water. NASCAR has the 2nd highest TV ratings here behind football, and there are no time outs for commercials there either. the networks simply break away from the action at scheduled intervals, and if anything big happens, they just break back in to the action. they could easily do the same thing with soccer if they wanted, so that has absolutely nothing to do with soccers lack of popularity.

i dont think its a joke. sure they paid a bucket load of cash for beckham but they have huge sport there to compete over there just like ''soccer'' in oz a lot to compete against. So we shouldn't dish them for trying to improve the status of the greatest game on earth and look at the ppl who will follow beckham, i think it was a great idea

Well, they have to compete with America's sporting xenophobia so they have to do things the American way. Its certainly not a top class league but getting America involved with anything the rest of the world likes has got to be a good thing.

Us soccer sucks big style. They're just trying to attract big-names to get ppl to come & watch. It's not even that popular over there -it's regarded as a minority sport. The Yanks don't care about the "beautiful game".It's all about the dollar. To us Becks is washed up, a has-been.To them he's Tom Cruise's best mate.Enough said.

I don't think American "soccer" is a joke. However, I do believe the majority of Americans are a joke. Especially their half-wit moronic imbecile president.

No, "American soccer" isn't a joke. The whole sport whether you call it soccer or football is a joke-not interesting in the least. It will never be big in the USA...Beckham will not be a very big celebrity either...just wait... we like baseball, FOOTBALL and basketball.
Just an opinion.
I guess by posting under the UK soccer heading you were hoping to get people with only your opinion, right??
Post in a category that impartial people will read, then you may get impartial answers.
JUST AS I FIGURED, THUMBS DOWN...YOU WERE ASKING FOR OPINIONS RIGHT?!
