If a woman starts birth control on the first day of her period, when does the protection begin? I looked it up, and just about all of the websights I've been on tell me she is protected right away, but when I talk to actual people they tell my that she needs to wait a month. Can anyone clarify this for me?

She is protected basically right away. A month is not necessary.
However my gynecologists in the past and present has always told me.to use alternative protection (condom) for a week after starting the pill. after that you are home free.

well if you start the pill then yes at least a month, for some 2 weeks.
on the patch it takes at least a week.
the patch starts by passing through the blood stream, and you can imagine how fast your blood stream moves, there for your get protection faster.
and it constantly for a week puts the two hormones estrogen and progestin through the skin to the blood stream.
as you go through you normal cycle every 28 days.
apply the evra patch once a week on the same day and time each week for 3 weeks.
during week for remove the patch and do not wear a patch for that week.
then after week for repeat all over again.
im sorry to rammble on i just like to give info thats all lol.
if you are that concernd then speak to your doc ok hun

good luck

The package insert should tell you exactly how long before you are protected. I don't know if it varies from brand to brand, but the insert I have says 7 days. I would continue to use a backup method for at least a month, but that's just me.

I am assuming that you are speaking of ORAL contraceptives. If so, Definately WAIT. Most things that I have read says 2 weeks! I would wait a month just to be safe.
