Imagine a slice through the pyramid centre to give you a isosceles triangle.

Now divide this through the apex of the pyramid so that you have a right-angled triangle with the given height of 6 metres. As this is 6 metres then the base will also be 6 metres.

Therefore the square on which the pyramid sits is 12m x 12m = 144 square metres.
