I started at age 3, with tap, and then added ballet, highland, ballroom, and finally modern jazz by the age of 18. If you are serious about dance you need to start young.

1) I was 13 going on 14 when I started. 2) I started out with jazz, included ballet when I was 15-16, started tap at 16-17 and hip hop at 19-20. 3) It's definitely not too late! We have heaps of people start later on, my ballet teacher LOVES these people because we are the ones who really want to be there, not just there because mum and/or dad makes them show up. And we have adult classes where people start in their 40's, 50's and even 60's with no prior dance experience! 4) I definitely still dance, I'm still doing all of the above and planning to add in contemporary aged 20-21 :) I dance between 4 and 6 days a week, depending on whether or not I have exams coming up, from between 1 and 4 hours a day. I'm also training to teach now, last year it was 2 days a week for 3 hours each day, not sure how much this year though. Give it a go, you might fall in love with it like I did! :)

Ideally speaking, the right age is 7 years.
By this age, children mature enough mentally and physically. Their body organs too are developed. Even if they want to pursue a career in dance, they get the proper span to learn, to develop, study all the major aspects of dance and start performing or conducting classes. The body is flexible at this age. To learn the dance as a hobby, one can start at any age. As long as you walk or move, you can definitely dance.
Dance also help to stay healthy and fit.

hmm, any age. to be highly proficient, the younger the better. However I have a problem with starting kids before they can make up their minds that it is something THEY want to do. To get really good, it takes much practice and hard work. Forcing it on children is not a good idea to me. Hell, forcing things on them usually only makes them hate them. But you can start learning at any age if you want to. Social dancing is not that time consuming or difficult. Stage and screen dancing is another thing entirely, and is pretty much only for young bodies.

If you're talking about classically trained dance like jazz, ballet, or modern, it's best to start training around the age of five because the movements are so specified and hard to learn. Also, you're more flexible at a young age and it's easier to maintain flexibility than it is to regain it.

I started at the age of 11 but dance is a hobby and there is no age-barrier. anyone can learn it if it is his/her passion and derives pleasure in learning it.
