If you are on a limited time, I would recommend either:
-the Whitsunday islands (where Whitehaven beach is located)
You cannot find sea more blue, sand more white, it is an absolute paradise.
It is pure luxury, it is quiet, romantic, and you can find accommodation at different prices.
The Great Barrier Reef is a wonder of the world!

-Surfers Paradise, on the Gold Coast. You will find more of a night life, lots of luxury boutiques, guaranteed weather, and fantastic beach. Expect massive towers everywhere though, it is very very popular, so hotels are massive.

Enjoy your trip!

I've been to Australia twice now, both times to The Goldcoast. We stayed a little out of Surfers in a place called Broadbeach - the hotel was wonderful and the taller hotels were back up in Surfers. We went in April and the weather was lovely, the beaches were empty and there are literally miles and miles of golden sand. I have some of the most amazing pictures of these empty golden beaches. I would definately recommend staying out of Surfers if you want peace..... Also the restaurants around Broadbeach are really good and you are not very far from a huge shopping centre. However I would highly recommend a day trip into the mountains as the scenery is stunning. We did two weeks to Broadbeach with a two night stopover to Singapore for a very reasonable price. I would highly recommend Mercury Direct, they are very knowledgable and just about the best prices around, especially for their 'free week' offers. Have fun - I love the place!

Depends where you're flying into. Australia is a HUGE country.I've been three times, visited great beaches all over, including Port Douglas and Monkey Mia already mentioned. If you're after quieter beaches I would suggest the west coast, but for more life and snorkeling the Great Barrier Reef, Queensland has it all. Enjoy. I've been back 2 months and I'm saving for my next visit!

Try up in Queensland. Off the coast of Brisbane there is an island called Stradbrook, which is lovely. Not luxury in fact a little primitive, but a great beach
The Whitsundays as mentioned.
Byron Bay.

January is going to be a poor time for something low priced for the organic and straightforward fact that it relatively is college trip trips and summer time college trip trips at that so all of us is wanting beachside... in case you may trip early Febrary then it will be a lot extra cost-effective... attempt around the Gold or Sunshine Coasts. in case you bypass to the Gold Coast bypass to the Natral Bridge and Lamington national Park (Binna Burra or O'Reilly's) for trekking and stuff...
