They were dropped by giant flying birds called Rocs.
Seriously, the greatest percentage flew in on planes, or their parents lived there.

That's a good question.
There could be several answers, like when the plates shifted to form our continents, fragments broke away making the islands, the people who were there (if man was around that time), couln't jump that far to get back on the mainland, and no-one had invented swimming lessons so they were pretty much stuck.
Ooooor by the time boats/canoes had been invented, some early homo sapien hippy type dudes went on a trip and landed on an island, chilled out having BBQ's while their boats/canoes floated away.
I know it's a light hearted look at the possible answers, but hey life's fun...once again great question :)

Early humans were remarkably adept at sea travel, especially over short distances (such as, between islands). Some scholars back the theory surrounding the direct connection between civilisation such as the Egyptians and the Mayans. That's no mean feat, even by todays standards!

Wide expanses of the Pacific Ocean are dotted with islands. According to author James Michener (birthday today), natives traveled over 2,000 miles by raft from Bora Bora to Hawaii. Their priests 'knew' how to travel using the stars (even to uncharted areas).
