Try having a look at www.vic.gov.au. It has links to all the local councils websites under the Property & Planning tab. Also www.localgovernment.gov.au which has a Metropolitan map on it's home page to help you work out the council that covers the area you're interested in. Then try some of the real estate websites like www.domain.com.au as they have good info too.

I have lived in the Eltham area all my life and I love it (It's El-tham not Elt-ham over here). It's about 25km's into town and is a really beautiful, natural setting. There's great schools, including private if you prefer that, good shops and restaurants, lots of parks, heaps of families and it's a safe place to live - very low crime rate. There's quite a few suburbs in the surrounding area that are just as nice. Just type the postcode 3095 into a real estate website and you'll get the idea.

In general avoid the north-west and western suburbs and some of the areas close to town as they wouldn't be considered safe by most of us. If you narrow your choice to a specific area, put up another question. Melbournians are pretty forthcoming and you'll know soon enough if it's good or not.

Hi, i live in templestowe....its about 20min from the city..we have all entertaining venues at our doorstep...great restuarants...shopping centres...play centres...wonderful parks....so it has been great for my family....The state schools have good reputations...and the catholic schools in the area come very highly recommended....
the entry price for a standard home is about $400,000 aud with properties into the millions
the suburbs in this area are great...they are clean and the people around you are very nice...
i have only been living here for 7years i was born and bred in the western suburbs i would not recommend living there with a young family..
all the best with your decision...

That depends on your budget, but for me the best are Toorak and Brighton. The best private schools are around and they're fairly close to the CBD.
I'm also moving to Melbourne soon, but from Venezuela, and that's where I'll try to settle in.
