He eats food in comics, movie and smallville, but how much of it is necessary for him on earth? What if he leaves our solar system? (like in "superman returns" he goes to where krypton was for 5 years)

I hate to break it to you, but it's all made up. He doesn't really exist. The guy playing him actually died not so long ago.

Think of all the calories he burns saving the world.
He would need to eat a lot of food to make up for that. I am sure they eat some food sustains on other world.

Maybe he needed food growing up, but once fully grown he just needs energy from the sun. One comic had him say he could only hold his breath in space for 40min.

Yeah, like all of us, He'll starve to death without eating enough protein (for his muscles), carbohydrate (which gives him energy), and fibers (to prevent toxin built up in the intestines and waste removal)

I always wondered the same thing. That and if Superman was real then how would he cut his hair? Would he need kryptonite sissors?

superman does not need to eat (he absorbs solar energy) but he was raised to believe he was human so its a habit he has retained.

No, he does not have to consume food, but he does it so that he can fit in with normal Earth people

technically no, but he does to be friendly.
i read some of the answers and if your interested he shaves and cuts his own hair and beard with a mirror and his heat vision.
