All wood contains water, even wooden doors. When water freezes, the wood will warp a little.

As an experiment, take a straight piece of wood (not balsa) and soak it. Put it in the freezer for a day. It will never be straight agian.

Well seasoned wood or kiln dried wood will cause a lesser problem. Some moisture always remains in wood - wood is that is too dry is subject to cracking also. Once the wood has been fabricated into doors, windows or furniture etc. it should be quikly finished with whatever end-use requirements are - wood sealing, staining, varnish coat, clear acrylic coat, paint finish etc.

The following is a simple repair technique, if you need to fix a door that does not close properly due to the above condition:

Wood has some quantity of water in it. In winter, moisture in air will be more and wood will absorb more moisture and the doors will become tight and hence they bend. In summer they will loose their water quantity and become loose. So you can see gaps in between door and wall. This problem will not araise if we use well seasoned wood. It will not become big in winter and small in summer. Drawing boards, meter scales etc., are made with well seasoned wood.

It would be best to replace the door with a solid core door. The time and money spent on repairing a hollow core door is a waste. You will want to invest in a deadbolt lock as well as a spare key, to place in a very secret spot. Check with your homeowners insurance, maybe you could get them to pay for replacement, get some estimates and then collect the money and do the replacement yourself.
