Warner Brothers studios took a chance with Humphrey Bogart for the romantic male lead in "Casablanca" (1942). Bogie starred in the WB smash hit "The Maltese Falcon" the year before. The film broke box-office records for that year. Studio heads were hoping for another financially successful year at the box-office which is why they hired bogie to portray Rick Blaine. They felt he was the man who would give them another hit movie. Ingrid Bergman, another box-office draw was cast as the leading lady. "Casablanca" not only exceeded the studio's expectations but also went on to become one of the most admired and classic films of all time. Humphrey Bogart's work in the film further structured the actor's wide range of character acting and added another great performance to his already talented repertoire. I've attached links for more info on both the actor and the film.

I don't remember Humphrey Bogart in a "fighting movie." He had a way with dialogue because he had an unusual voice. He wasn't really handsome in a movie star way, but he was very magnetic. He also had a way of showing vulnerability that most male actors didn't have. His movies are usually pretty deep and intellectual and have a lot more talking than action. I thought he was perfect in Casablanca.

The people who chose Bogey for the film are most likely all gone. I have no idea why he was chosen for certain, but I can envision no one else in that role. Bogart was a master.

Rick: Clive Owen (rugged sturdy seems, pulls off "tortured" nicely) Ilsa: Scarlett Johanssen (elegance, appearing chops) Lazlo: Michael Vartan. French, sturdy-looking yet really wimpy-er than Clive, can do "noble" nicely (see Alias career) Cpt. Renault: "Ben" (chief of "The Others" on lost) can't extremely say why. only sounds like a in good structure, assuming that position may be extra subtly finished in recent times.

His agents at MGM wanted him to expand his roles for the same reason you stated. He was type cast as a tough hence Casablanca and the African Queen.
