Mozilla Firefox is much preferable to IE 7.
1.It is a smaller application, and runs faster.
2.It does not attract as much attention of hackers as does IE, hence it is safer.
3.It is highly customizable and at no cost. You can get numerous add-ons to make it what you want it to be. In case of IE, most add-ons have to be purchased.
4.If Firefox encounters some problem and closes while you are in the middle of doing something, you can restore that session when re-opening it. The same is not true for IE.

BUT, you DO need IE to update your Windows and stuff. So, you MUST keep it as your default browser.

Brian Krebs at the Washington Post's Security Fix blog wanted to put together some statistics on how long it took major software providers to fix vulnerabilities last year. He started with Microsoft, and found that Internet Explorer was vulnerable to critical flaws for a total of 284 days. That's more than 9 months.

In fact, there were at least 98 days when Microsoft had not issued a fix even though criminals were actively exploiting some of those flaws to grab personal data from Internet Explorer users.

Krebs says he ran his data by Microsoft before posting it on the blog, and that aside from some minor issues, the company didn't bring up anything that would change the overall finding.

By comparison, Firefox was only vulnerable to a serious security threat for one 9 day period last year. What's interesting is that for 2006, Opera 8 and Opera 9 didn't suffer from a single extremely critical vulnerability as classified by Secunia (although both did suffer a single highly critical vulnerability).

My experience told me that firefox is safer than IE. But firefox doesn't support certain websites. So I will use firefox for all the websites except when I can't see what I expect after a click or submission button, then I switch to IE. There are just too many viruses for IE !!! Oooh! Just got automatic updated to 1.5.0.7 of firefox. It is fast and sweet. Ans. to your additional info. I trusted microsoft windows auto update that they are really trying to keep on updating windows and explorer. BUT there are just too many hackers to hack IE. So we better stay away from IE at this moment. After all, if you don't even trust microsoft, then you can't use your PC to ask your question. (cos you are using windows to surf internet, I suppose) (Well, you have the other choice Mac)

Firefox by far...

I can block literally ALL of the ads in Yahoo's pages - banner ads, text ads, search ads, you name it.
How? Adblock Plus and Stylish.

I can control my music player without switching to it.

I can have very safe surfing by not only not having ActiveX, but not letting sites set cookies or JavaScript. All three are known security and privacy risks.

I can change anything and everything about Firefox - legally.

You can't do these things in IE (...yet. MS's still looking at the code that Firefox / the add-ons use heh heh heh... you'll see it in IE8 when it comes out in 2012)

Actually myself and 3 computer programming friends have tested the mozilla firefox browser and found back door in the system. Basically any amatuer hacker could bypass the system and access your personal information. So its not safe at all. Go for MIE. Its faster, easier to use and safer. Trust me i use it and absolutely no problems whatsoever..........

You only need to do a search on here to see how many people are having problems with IE. Firefox Is faster, more user friendly, easily customisable to suit your needs and no problems.

Microsoft IE7 is by far the best, but you need XP Service Pack 2 or later to run it. Has all the same feature and now includes tabbed browsing and quicker loading, plus the standards we have come to know from Microsoft
