I upgraded my system and bought a lap top so have a back up. The old machine P2 with 40 GB hard drive works perfecty and it seems a pity to take it to the tip. The hard drive is formated ready for software installation. Who will take it off my hands in the West Midlands/ Shropshire?

Advertise it in your local free ads or supermarket notice board. Someone will take it off your hands and make good use of it. If I lived closer I would take it myself for my grandaughter

When you bought your new pc did the seller not take you old one as a trade in? This is something these people should be doing nowadays as the number of old computer parts hit the dumps if they are not recycled like you want to do to yours. Soon dumps sites will be filled with old pc parts that contain certain elements that are salvageable and which will leak into the soil and cause problems down the line. Humans never seem to think far enough ahead in this environmental thing to prevent problems that we know may be lurking for those in the future. I hope you get a buyer and next time see if the store selling computers has a used computer parts section that they can make available to potential buyers. Good luck.

Damn if I was there I'd take it as I'm looking for one to make a media centre.
Why don't you do that? If it is a 400mhz comp you could bung in a tv out and connect it to your tv. It would play anything you threw at it (unlike most dvd players) and it would record as divx.
You could bung in this OS

to make it into a fast loading media centre and go the whole hog with a new case

That way you could recycle it yourself and have a bit of fun.

just leave it on your car backseat and go shopping for 10 mins.
When you get back someone will have removed the burden for you and created a new air vent in your car window. A double bonus!!
