You are asking two different questions. You have to know the first, however, to know the second. Human nature has many definitions.... philosophical, anthropological, biological.... And within each field of learning, you'll find dozens of answers.

Ego, higher capacity for consciousness and intelligence to put the consciousness into applied knowledge. This is what differentiates humans from other organic life here in this planet.
It does not mean, however, that we are better than all other organic life forms. It only makes us think we are better (ego), more aware (conscious) and more knowledgeable (intelligent). It is also the reason why we are more chaotic.
To be happy and more harmonious with other species on this planet?
Be wise in knowing that we are not any better or any worse than each other and everything else.

Human nature is positive, in between and negative. You have to decide to be happy. You can't make other people happy, they have to decide to be.

We are savages, as in the beginning of time. Just think about it, and it will make more sense.
As for making others happy, it should be natural. To make ourselves happy, we have to know who we are.

Human tendency is to be selfish at all times. He may look as if he is doing good to all, but he will definitely be selfish at some point. One thing we can do to make others happy is to hide the selfishness as much as possible. Let them not realise our selfishness.
