Does anyone have experience in ultrasound pics? My friends baby does not look right. I believe she is 7 months and it appears the hand is webbed, the face is distorted on one side and the baby's eye is wide open as if no eyelid. Please tell me I am wrong. Can you email me ONLY IF you have experience in working in ultrasound and I will email you the pic. Many thanks.

This is a very CLEAR ultrasound pic. This is not a fuzzy early photograph. It is 3'd trimester. I would NEVER let the mommy know...it's the gramma of the baby-to-be that I am friends with and just very VERY concerned. I am just convinced something is not right. I do not overreact, by any means, but this is pretty clear to me. I've been in the medical field myself for 22 years...albeit, I do not have xray/ultrasound experience. Hoping someone can clarify to me. IF there is an apparent wrong, gramma would know and prepare herself to go to next visit w her daughter (who is unwed). I am sure she is not going to do anything or say anything until the doc does. But preparation is key for her.

I have to tell you that when I am unfortunate enough to do an ultrasound on an abnormal fetus, I do not give out pictures to the parents. We don't do that. It takes quite a bit of practice to be able to decipher ultrasound images. The images are so foreign to someone not used looking at them. If this fetus is 7 months along, one side of the face will be distorted if the baby is laying a certain way. If the image is sideways, the bottom part of the face will not be very clear due to the interference of the bone at the top of the image. You cannot see eye lids on ultrasound either. As for the fingers, it is very hard to get a good hand picture, as the fingers must be lined up exactly in order to see them all. The mother-to-be should ask her OB/GYN to look at the pictures and explain them to her.

First of I'm glad your looking out for your friend but these Ultrasound pics never look like the baby they are intended to check that the heart has 4 Chambers and other anatomical parts etc to est. the gestational age and wt of the baby and to see id it's vertex (head down) or breech (but down). not to see eyelids etc..so relax and enjoy this time of excitement with your friend. also no Doctor is going to hide the fact of a problem from the mom if he had seen anything concerning he would have prepared the family and sent her to a perinatoligist for a work up.

Most likely she is absolutely fine! As posted above - Ultrasound's are taken through a lot of "gunk" if you will.

Not to scare you - however there could be a matter of things (if there was something wrong with your baby) that could be wrong! My best advice is to visit your hospital and consult with a neonatal doctor or specialized nurse (neonatal doctors and nurses specialize in infants).

I've done ultrasounds before at the hospital during my first 2 years as an RN - I could take a look if you want. Just send me a message (since I'm not posting my e-mail address for the globe to see) and I'll send you back my e-mail address. I'm sure nothing is wrong with your baby, though :-).

The baby is fine! Ultrasound pics are taken through skin and lots of fluid. The picture isn't going to come out clear. The baby never looks like the ultrasound whe it comes out. And Shame on you for saying such horrible things. Think of how your friend would feel if she heard you saying these things about her baby.

I don't think you are a bad person for wondering about this...I think that if there was anything really wrong, the doctors would have prepared her, but I think that you are a good friend to be concerned, and to perhaps prepare yourself for the support she would need. just my thoughts.
