Definitely a mom & pop type place. I support small businesses. Maybe it's because I've owned one, and the employees are like family to the owners. Not so in a chain restaurant who churn out the same food to millions of people and the servers are just there for a job. They don't care if you don't like the food. The little place is struggling usually and will do anything to make everything right for you because they're not owned by a rich corporation.

It all depends on the food. I'd try the local joint over Applebees any day. Depends on where you are too. In a big city you can be more sure of good food at an independant restaurant then in a small town in a rural setting. If I was in a run down neighborhood in the middle of nowhere I'd go for the chain. Nothing worse than paying good money for food & getting served crap.

If I am traveling, I go to the chain restaurants. Locally, I know neighborhood restaurants that have good food and I know which chains I like. I tend to eat at the neighborhood ones more often because we adore Chinese and Thai food.

I personally like going to the one of a kind family owned restaurants because I feel like they put more effort into keeping things neat and clean... as well as having their own style and personality. Anyone who has worked at a restaurant big or small knows what goes on behind the scenes.... and as clean as the place may look on the outside... it usually cuts some corners in the back. I feel like family restaurants take more pride in their work and their property, and therefore everything is much cleaner. Most restaurants you go to end up having the same types of food anyhow, or at least pretty close.

Neighborhood family places are my preference. The chains seem to overcharge and the meals don't taste as home made. They are fun for going with groups for special occasions but I prefer a local place much more. I think you get a better value for your money and a much better meal.

Chains are okay but I think its great to find a "hole in the wall" place or some quaint family run business to eat at...variety in the food, atmosphere and helping the local economy/families. If you are asking in terms of food prep/safety--chains and non-chains are inspected/regulated by the same local entities....should be equally safe

Chain restaurants are good because you know what to expect. Local places are better because they are something you can't get everywhere. It's different. Plus, I like to support the little guy.

THE CHAINS ARE GOOD TO EAT AT WHEN YOU ARE TRAVELING BECAUSE YOU KNOW WHAT TO EXPECT, WE LIKE TO EAT AT THE NEIGHBORHOOD PLACES AROUND HOME OR PLACES WE KNOW.
