I think it is trying to ask you how that particular subject shares style or subject and the words used that can affect the reader to develop a sense of individual characters.Rather confusing.
A sense of individual characters means the act that character is trying to bring out.

Well, What is the genre of the book, so say it was a mystery iit would be like, there was a dark and scary cat creechy by the door, when the phone rang. sorta like that, then did it have to do with one person? or charater?

The words he used give you an insight into the characters personalities.Give examples of how the writer achieved this.
