Hello, I have ordered a new pc and my old one will be moved to a different area of the house. My cable company says I can rent a wireless modem from them so both pc's can be online. Can I buy my own to do the same job, or will I have to rent theirs? Also my new pc has an ASUS WIFI motherboard, so do I just need to get a wireless card for my old pc to have them both hooked up to the internet?
Thankyou
Joe

I assume you already have a wired cable modem ... correct ?
In this case all you need is a wireless router & a WiFi card for the old PC.

The cable modem you now have will feed into (be connected to) the wireless router & both PCs will be receiving a network signal from the router enabling them to access the Internet simultaneously.

This will give you greater control over the network & probably greater security features as well.

I'm not sure of the features in the wireless modem you are considering, however, a wireless router will also enable you to create a secure home network where PCs can easily share & transfer files.
You can even add external storage connected to the router & shared by all.

The cost is very affordable & the choices are far vaster than those for a wireless modem:

you can buy all you need to go wireless from a competer shop, computer wearhouse is the best and cheapest. you will need a internet router to connect to your new pc and a wireless card connected to your old pc this will cost about £70 all together but then it is yours to keep. renting this may look cheaper but if you rent it for a long time it will cost you more. if you buy the router you will have to make sure that it is compatible with your phone company just ask the person at the desk at the shop and they will help.

Take a look at what kind of wireless cards / thumbs your computers have, and find a router that will work well with both.

I recommend you buy it, personally, but do your research first.

You can have both on the wireless, both on cables, or one on cable, one on wireless.
Do NOT buy the cables at a big box store - they get a huge profit from it! Look around on ebay, if that's the way you want to go.

Also: Do the environment and your community a favour and sign up with your local freecycle. Instead of tossing stuff you don't use anymore, you can give it to someone who wants / needs it.

Yes to both questions. Wireless modems are fairly cheap now. BUT do make sure you buy one with lots of range. Wireless signals struggle to get through walls.

I have a basic Netgear wireless router in the centre of a house; walls are stone but it's all on one floor and it's fairly compact. The signal doesn't reach to the far corners where it has to pass through two walls.

A prompt modem router could be a prompt router/modem blend and a prompt router could purely be a router by potential of itself. in case you had intense-velocity cable information superhighway you will choose for a modem linked to a prompt router to get online.

In most cases you should be able to purchase your own wi-fi router and have it work - and yes if the old computer isn't equipped with a wi-fi card and you want it wireless you have to get a device; be it a wi-fi card or a USB plug in wi-fi adapter which just plugs into a USB port and works once the software (comes with) is installed.....no need to open the case with these gadgets.
