They happen because the earth's axis is tilted by 23.5 degrees. As the earth rotates around the sun, the angle of the light hitting the earth varies. During the summer it is more of a direct angle, therefore more intense, and the opposite in the winter.

well the earth is always tilted. so when earth is on one side of the sun during its 365 day orbit, the hemisphere thats tilted towards it gets more sunlight and longer days, while the other half gets shorter days and less sunlight. 6 months later, or half of the orbit, it is reversed. when the earth is at equal distance on both sides, spring and fall aka the equinox, we have days of even sunlight and darkness, 12 hours a piece. seasons always fall on the 21st 3 months apart, or a quarter of its orbit.

seasons are due to the earth tilting on its axis periodically as it goes around the sun..

when the earth tilts, countried below the equator become closer to the sun and experience more direct sunlight (less atmosphere to cut through cos lower angle).. which causes their summer (and spring..leading up to it).

countries above the equator get further from the sun as the earth tilts, meaning colder climates (winter!) as the suns rays have mroe atmosphere to penetrate.

the effects are all related to the change in the intensity of the suns rays hitting the earth at a given point as the earth tilts. (because there is less atmosphere to cut through when a country is closer to being in line with the sun, more heat and UV rays hit it, and vice versa when it is tilted away.)

they happen because of the rotation of earth. during summer, the sun raises high on the sky, while during winter it only stays to the horizon. the difference of temperature is proportional to the amount of heat give by the sun.
