It does not consume ram to have songs stored. They are stored on the hard drive. The space of your hard drive gets lower as you put more programs, songs, pictures, etc on it. The amount of songs you have is only limited to how much storage (Gb's) your hard drive has.
The ram more so comes into play when you are running programs. The more ram you have, the most programs you can have open at the same time. But if you just run one or two programs, and exit each one before starting something else, then the 256Mb ram will be bearable.
256Mb ram is pretty low, enough to just get by... 512Mb is the least amount I would use for Windows 2000 or XP. 256Mb would be more suited for Windows 98.

Things on your harddrive (songs, programs, etc.) don't use up RAM; RAM is used everytime you run a program or file. The more RAM you have, the faster programs will run and the less they'll lock up (freeze). 256MB is nothing, you should upgrade to at least 512MB of RAM to have your computer even run kind of good. The only other thing that would directly speed up your comp is the processor, but those are nearly impossible to replace unless you know exactly what you're doing.
If you want to hold more songs or if you ran out of room on your hard drive, buy an external hard drive (i.e. Maxtor, Seagate) that can hold all your music.

songs only use up RAM when they are being played. Same as software and any other type of file - if it's sitting quietly on your disk, it doesn't use up RAM
But getting your RAM up from 256MB to say 1GB will make a huge difference to speed. This is partly because lots of bits of software don't sit quietly on your disk like they should - they load themselves up so that they're ready and waiting when you need them. A bit like an over-eager butler - you'll keep tripping over him.
Having lots of RAM is a much cheaper way to soup up the performance of your computer than having a fast processor, IMHO.
Disk space becomes important to computer speed when it starts to get low.

N O - just space on your hard drive.
Buying more RAM will speed up the computer.
Also closing programs that you don't need running all the time in your 'task bar' (see start up menu) - every program listed on the taskbar (bottom right side of the screen) is running and many may not have to. Check to see what if any you can close down until you need them. This will also bring a speed increase to your system.

songs dont use RAM, they are stored on a hard disk
but you do need RAM to make the computer run faster with such a low amount, because RAM is like the amount of 'working memory' the computer has to play with when running things.. less ram means itll have to copy stuff into ram more often which will slow it down

no it only takes up your hard disk space... the ram only loads up a file when u are useing it.... so if u want to store a lot of songs in your computer then get a good hard disk

that would desire to do the interest. via my suggestion is to purchase a computer particularly than a computing gadget. purchase a gaming laptop on your place stuff and purchase a classic computing gadget on your college artwork. laptops regardless of how stable they're gets heated with heavy use and specifically in case you're working a quad middle on finished velocity you will warmth it up very rapidly. yet once you in basic terms desire a computing gadget i think of this one is stable sufficient to shelter the standards.

Only if you are running a program to listen to them. Otherwise they are just stored on your disk.
