The sea doesn't have much of a smell - but the shore has a distinct smell. ALong the shore are lots of different decaying seaweeds, plants, materials carried down to the shore from rivers and streams that reach into the countryside, etc

When you are out on a boat far from shore and then you return to the shore, you notice the smell as you approach!
