There are NO differences between a panther (in the sense its used in the US) a puma, a cougar or a mountain lion - they are ALL the same cat.

A jaguar is very different and can be found in South America.

*If you mean black panthers, then they're leopards otherwise called the melanistic variety however its misleading, you also get Black Jaguars. The name panther could be used to describe the genera panthera which includes the big cats - Tiger, Lion, Jaguar & Leopard.*

However, I've found from experience that if you're in the US, people mean 'panther' as yet another common name for the Cougar. In all fairness I would say that Puma was the best name for the cat since its Latin name is 'Puma concolor' (this should be typed in italics like any species name).

Regards.

Puma Vs Jaguar

They are three different species. The Puma is a sort of grey/brown in colour. Both panthers (who are also known as leopards) and jaguars normally have a spotted coat, but can come in rare all-black colour. Jaguars and leopards/panthers are very similar but come from different continents (S America / Africa). Jaguars are much more solid looking and muscly than panthers.
