You can go in several ways, a simple burial is explained as above.
Embalmed, the blood is removed from the veins and substituted
by chemicals which will keep the body intact although somewhat
discoloured and wrinkly. And also, you can be cremated where the
the body is slipped into a special furnace and only dust remains,
the result of which will be returned to the next of kin in a small
container. Take your choice, the body goes but the spirit lives on.
Modern freaks have their bodies frozen in liquid gas which keeps
it intact with hopes that, someday, science will be able to unfreeze
and return all to normal, this last option costs a fortune paid in
monthly dues and kept in cylinders. This is called cryogenic freezing

It depends only on the moisture of your future environment.
If you shall be put in a dry soil with moisture level well below 10%, no microbial activities shall take place. Your own degrading enzymes do also not work. You shall be dried and look like, more or less, a mum for eternity.
But, in opposite, if you shall be stored in wet conditions, all enzymatic processes - both microbial and the ones of your own body's - start to work and your proteins turn to amines, your fats turn to fatty acids and you do not look as pretty as when you were alive....
Better to choose your final resort, I think. I recommend dry sites in the warm sunny afternoon light...Good luck to find one!

It depends on what you want
Man: (entering a shop) Um, excuse me, is this the undertaker's?
Undertaker: Yup, that's right, what can I do for you, squire?
Man: Um, well, I wonder if you can help me. My mother has just died and I'm not quite sure what I should do.
Undertaker: Ah, well, we can 'elp you. We deal with stiffs.
Man: (aghast) Stiffs?
Undertaker: Yea. Now there's three things we can do with your mum. We can bury her, burn her, or dump her.
Man: Dump her?
Undertaker: Dump her in the Thames.
Man: (still aghast) What?
Undertaker: Oh, did you like her?
Man: Yes!
Undertaker: Oh well, we won't dump her, then. Well, what do you think: burn her, or bury her?
Man: Um, well, um, which would you recommend?
Undertaker: Well they're both nasty. If we burn her, she gets stuffed in the flames, crackle, crackle, crackle, which is a bit of a shock if she's not quite dead. But quick. And then you get a box of ashes, which you can pretend are hers.
Man: (timidly) Oh.
Undertaker: Or, if you don't wanna fry her, you can bury her. And then she'll get eaten up by maggots and weevils, nibble, nibble, nibble, which isn't so hot if, as I said, she's not quite dead.
Man: I see. Um. Well, I.. I.. I.. I'm not very sure. She's definitely dead.
Undertaker: Where is she?
Man: In the sack.
Undertaker: Let's 'ave a look.
(FX: rustle of bag opening)
Undertaker: Umm, she looks quite young.
Man: Yes, she was.
Undertaker: (over his shoulder) FRED!
Fred: (offstage) Yea!
Undertaker: I THINK WE'VE GOT AN EATER!
Fred: I'll get the oven on!
Man: Um, er...excuse me, um, are you... are you suggesting we should eat my mother?
(pause)
Undertaker: Yeah. Not raw, not raw. We cook her. She'd be delicious with a few french fries, a bit of stuffing. Delicious! (smacks his lips)
Man: What! (he stammers)
(pause)
Man: Actually, I do feel a bit peckish - No! NO, I can't!
Undertaker: Look, we'll eat your mum. Then, if you feel a bit guilty about it afterwards, we can dig a grave and you can throw up into it.
Man: All right.

Our body will be broken down by scavengers/insects and then decomposed by micro-organisms (which people call rotting in a not-so-nice way) into simpler materials like nitrogen compounds and returned to the earth. After which the nitrogen compounds will be absorbed by plants and used for their growth and then when they have grown, humans will probably consume them and then converted into their body materials and the cycle goes on again....
How interesting...

decomposition begins almost right away.We start to become dehydrated, the cells shrink, oxygen is gone, bacteria start to use our tissue as a growth medium and eventually all soft tissue is used up.Hard tissue, such as bone and teeth remain intact for years.

bacteria act on the flesh and decompse it = they dissolve the cell membranes, thus releasing the nutrients and minerals into the soil. this is how the soil becomes fertile.
