I posted a question about java a couple of days ago, and it looks like I have to install Java Virtual Machine, which means downloading Version 5.0 Update 10. Trouble is, it won't work on my system, which is Windows XP64 bit.

I already have Java 2 Runtime, SE v1.4.2, but it's not working for certain applications (although it does for others), and one new application in particular is necessary for my work.

Heeelp!

Re:-Windows XP Professional x64 Edition
Note Microsoft does not produce a 64-bit native Microsoft VM, but this information also applies to the 32-bit Microsoft VM under WOW64 in 64-Bit versions of Windows.

From the Sun JRE site
See the configuration tables for different JRE on different operating systems and download your required JRE.
http://java.sun.com/products/archive/j2se/5.0/system-configurations.html

System Requirements
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 is supported on Windows platforms running on 64-bit AMD processors. For supported versions of Windows and desktop managers, along with disk and RAM requirements, see System Configurations.
Installation Instructions
This procedure installs the J2SE Runtime Environment, but not the Java Plug-in or Java Web Start (which are not yet available for 64-bit Windows). The J2SE Runtime Environment for Windows 64-bit comes bundled in the install formats whose filename is given here:
* Self-extracting binary:
jre-1_5_0_-windows-amd64.exe

To install, download this file and otherwise follow the 32-bit Windows installation.

To search the Sun site for info about JDK/JRE go to

Hello,

(ANS) The answer is the problem is caused because you have a 64bit version of windows XP. Most current software has been developed (created or written) for 32bit driven systems, that is both the CPU & operating system i.e. windows is only 32bit compatible.

For 64bit driven systems ALL the software including windows has to be re-written (re-complied) for 64bit processors. In other words if you have bought a 64bit processor machine (hardware) everything has to be compatible, that is all software from the OS (windows, or whatever), your major applications, small software tools & utilities, ALL device drivers, etc, etc they "all" have to be 64bit versions.

**The software & computer industry are all moving in the direction of 64bit systems but (well business has had 64bit for servers, etc for a while now) the home & desktop market is lagging badly behined and its going to take another 3-5 yrs at this rate for all domestic computers & software to play catch up. Eventually all PC, laptops, notebooks, workstations & servers will be 64bit driven.

**In other words my guess is that you need a 64bit version of Java Runtime if they have such a version?

**The range of truely 64bit software written for XP is probably more limited than you realise.

There is no 64-bit version available on the java website. This could be sorta stupid, but maybe your version of java runtime environment is just not working properly.
You might want to try and uninstall java runtime and download and install the manual Java 5.0

Hope it works :D

try asking for help at java.com
http://java.com/en/download/manual.jsp
that is if the automatic link fails to install the correct version for your system.
http://java.com/en/download/index.jsp
however it should be pointed out that i think i'm right in saying that java may not be available to work in all programs and situations on a x64 system. this could be down to the firewall on your computer or incompatibility with your system.
your first action should be to ask for help at either java.com or microsoft.com.

good luck.

XP is physically powerful, much less issues linked with it wait till microsoft 7 is out to enhance this is widely acknowledged that Microsoft had a abode windows ME 2d whilst they created vista, so stick to with XP that is been going by using fact that early 2001 and it nevertheless works. besides I there are much less compatibility matters linked with XP by using fact virtually each little thing runs on it without a hitch. SO stick to XP.
