A caregiver for the community cats in my neighborhood just informed me that a couple of the community cats had been killed and eaten by stray dogs who happened to wander around in our neighborhood. Does anyone know if stray dogs will actually kill and eat cats when they are hungry?

Our community cats are stray cats too. It's just that I noticed that there are caregivers who feed the stray cats but I've never seen caregivers who feed stray dogs in our neighborhood.

I know I would if I were starving. These dogs most likely have learned to fend for themselves, else they wouldn't be alive today, and therefor they needed to call upon their instinct to hunt to obtain food.

It's either that or starving.

Yes there are dogs whether they are stray or not, that might not eat cats but will chase and/or kill cats and other animals. They don't have to be hungry to chase and kill another animal. Dogs and breeds that have a higher prey drive are more likely to do this. Are these community cats stray cats as well?

Some dogs are more likely to hunt and kill cats, squrrils, chipmunks or any small animals. If they are strays and trying to survive they will probably eat anything. Survival of the fitess...

I don't think they do it because of hunger. You know how they say "like cats and dogs". SOME (not all) dogs hate cats, and they chase them and may kill them. But this doesn't apply to all strays!

There's a great possibility. Aside from that the can also eat rabbits, rats or chicken.
