OK you have to be preparred to have a couple of nights where you will be totally exhausted, but in the long run it will help you, you can go ahead to decide to put this off for a bit because it is normal for a young child to be like this, but it want hurt you child if you don't want to put if off and do it now.
Get a light up toy and put it in his baby bed or some soothing music. Now you will need to make sure you put your child to bed at the same time most every night. Also get lubby toys or passy that kind of thing.
Put your baby in the bed and turn on soothing music or light up toy. Do not expect your baby to be asleep when he she first lays down, after all we do not do that. Your baby may cry and that is OK, you come in every ten to fifteen minutes and check on him. Don't kiss don't play, just say hi baby mommy is here. Don't even touch baby, this will cause stimulation thus prolonging sleep. Keep doing this until your child starts to fall asleep on his on. It takes a couple days for some longer for others, but it really does work. Then when they turn six they suddenly realize that lights make shadows and the clock ticks lol. That is what I am dealing with right now.

I had this same issue with my daughter a few years ago. First I but music on for her. (I used Mozart) Then I would lay her in her crib and pat her back or rub her tummy. (depending on which way she rolled). It took some time and several long nights. I never let her cry. I can't stand the sound of a crying baby. Eventually she fell asleep. Then leave the room as quit as possible. She woke up several time a night but after a few days she became used to it and start sleeping though the night. I hope it works for you.

Its a Little trick that worked for me the baby knows your there because of body heat get a hot water bottle but only put warm water in it and place it next to the baby, just rub your baby's back or tummy talk to the baby so it thinks your there and sneak out when its finally asleep! Enjoy and good luck.

Generally babies don't ever want to be seperated from their mothers, especially at that age because they don't even realise they are separate from their mothers. If you are not comfortable with sleeping with your 4mo baby, put his cot next to your bed & lye down & pat & sing him to sleep. You could also try putting him down in the cot when he falls asleep in your arms. Really there is not alot you can do at the moment as he is too young to just let him cry or carry out 'controlled crying'. I say put him in bed with you & enjoy the cuddling until he is a bit older.

give him a bath before bed...i use johnsons bedtime wash and it works wonders on my 6 mo old. Rock him or do whatever you normally do to get him to go to sleep(do it in his room with the lights dim or off and maybe soft music) then when he is almost asleep but not quite there, lay him in his crib. If he uses a pacifier, give it to him if he starts fussing.

He is just a little baby. Let him fall asleep with you and then move him to his crib.
