Being an ex hard core alcoholic for 20 years, cutting back on substance doesnt work...kicking it all together only worked.

You are looking to control an addiction, which really, you need to understand is beyond your control. Hence, the term addiction is used here.

If something that you desire brings more pain and harm in your life than good, then why do you need it in the first place?

You can only control the addiction by first realising the reality - that this addiction is beyond your control.

There's only two options for you - either you start taking control over your life, or let your addiction take over you. Either one or the other, realise that this is a CHOICE that you are making on yourself.

Willpower is what it needs. Sounds like you can ratchet your addiction up and down. Try to get rid of it altogether. Truth is that no addition is easy to get rid of.
