It is easy to complain about something without offering a better alternative. The justice system is not unique in offering special benefits to the wealthy. Every aspect of our entire system offers special benefits to the wealthy. They fly first class and have everything done for them. They get quick seating in expensive restuauants and eat like kings. They live in mansions with servants. They enjoy every type of special privilege and pleasure that can be invented. they get better medical care and live longer.
The men get prettier wives. It is all part of being rich. nobody hates the airlines for selling first class seats etc so why do you single out the legal system for this abuse. It is completely consistent with the capitalistic free enterprise system that you love so much.
YES, we as a society should make certain that crooks go to jail but that would mean that we have to PAY for the court system to do it. We would have to have a huge increase in our court budget to do this. The DAs hired would have to be paid over a million dollars a year if we as a society wants the best attorneys working for the state. Are you willing to do this just so a few rich guys can go to jail?
So money will always give you an adantage in every situation. that is why the average American worships it so and chases it so hard and buys stuff on credit so he can LOOK rich even if he is not.
The public defenders that are offered to the poor are very underpaid and overworked so most of the convictions are among the poor class. Most of the PDs just try to get the client to plead out to a lesser crime so he can get to the next client. He may have as many as 100 clients to defend at one time.
OJ would be in jail now if the LA legal system had better quality attornys and judges and better quality cops, but that costs money and people hate high taxes so we get what we pay for.
This system of special protection and privilege for the rich existed long before capitalism with the royal system it replaced. It is ingrained deeply as part of the nature of man. So do not single out the poor overworked underpaid legal system and its dedicated servants for your disapproval and wrath. do not hate the player, hate the game.
Maybe some intellgent fair tax policies would even out some of the advantages the rich have, at least if we used the money for health care or to improve legal system. BUT the rich control the congress too so how can we raise taxes on rich without starving the poor? Poor people tend to vote for emotional reasons and are easily deluded into voting for idiots like Bush. the man ( or woman) with the most money will win the next elect too unless the voters wise up and vote for the best person instead of the one with the best TV ads and PR. That would take work to study and learn and most americans would rather just sit around and complain than do what it takes to improve things.
The poor people and middle class people have to form a coaltion to use their votes to elect politicians that are best qualified, not the richest. Ralph Nader gets ignored every year and yet he would probably solve a lot of problems for the people if he was given a chance. Vote wisely. be pro-active fpr change.

When it comes to business, there are many protections in place to prevent rich people from buying the right to commit crimes.
The market place severely punishes dopes with schemes. Enron went bankrupt as a result of market forces, not any judiciary, and it happened quickly. It took about 30 days for them to go from a top-rated Fortune 500 company to bankrupt.
Regulatory agencies force large corps into extensive compliance that would make your head spin. Frankly, I think the amount of regulation our government imposes qualifies as totalitarianism against corporations. If anyone makes it through to the judiciary for actual punishment, it's likely they've already been punished elsewhere or paid substantially to dodge regulations.
Criminal cases are different, but don't just discount the quality of life OJ has right now. There are very few places where he can live without daily ridicule. He has no option for ever improving his life because he has a civil suit hanging over his head for the rest of his life. And every time he does anything in public, the whole world will be reminded in "OJ documentaries" what he did.

Unfortunately money talks, even in the world of justice and so forth... I'm ever an optimist and I prefer to trust that in the end the right side and truth will out. What the money'ed guilty can do is hire lawyers to talk technicalities and erect bunches of smoke and mirrors. It may seem flippant, but surprisingly, in a cynical way, "Chicago" has it just right.
All we can hope it that where it TRULY matters, where matters of Constitution (for Americans) and overall principles are at stake, the blind justice of the courts will do what's right. If we don't have this confidence, then our entire system falls apart...

IT IS TRUE WHAT YOU HAVE SAID, BUT they will pay for it one day. Remember the old saying, "what goes around comes around" and sometimes quicker then they think that it will. A public DA is nothing but a tool of the court, and they HAVE to pull this as it is mandatory for them to do so. They do not care one way or another about the outcome. Another thing that gets me is a Defense Lawyer defends someone who they KNOW is GUILTY. That speaks wonders for their Morals. They put money above being human. I sure do not want to be friends with any as they would just as soon as stab you in the back as look at you. The day is coming when they will ALL pay.

It has come to the day in America that a person gets just about as much justice as they can afford !!!
This is something though, that the public has ALLOWED to happen because of apathy and the view that there isn't anything that a person can DO about such stuff anyway --- which until fairly recently was totally wrong !! Now, though, it is a done deal and there will never be a "going back" -- so-- buckle up-- from here-- America changes-- and damn well not for the better !!!!

Very often, that is true.
I am a witness in a case right now where a corrupt CEO is using the company's money to pay lawyers to do whatever they can to cause the plaintiffs to have to spend money too. He said his goal is to cost them so much money that they can't continue, then they will just 'go away'.
He has lots of money, the company's money, and is spending it to prevent the ownership contracts of employees from being honored. The guy is total scum.

the state pays prosecuters and public defenders. arguably not very good lawyers. OJ probably would have been convicted if he hadn't had a good lawyer who suggested he try on the glove. Marsha had his hand and palm print but just wasn't smart enough to compare it to the size of the glove.

That is the problem with a crooked legal system that is designed to benefit the wealthy crooks over the average citizen. And you wonder why lawyers are the scum of the earth. Scum hang togeither and the both are bottom feeders not worth spiting on.

using oj as the single case to prove our point is laughable. do you know what a career criminal is? they are made by habitual criminals being put back into population. what about drug dealers?i can make the same argument on both sides.oj's trial was lost from botched police work. they were able to refute every piece of evidence bc of tampering or gross negligence of police. oj did it, police got him off, not his money. all enron, tyco, adelphia cable ceo's and higher management are in jail. justice is blind and i believe it, if i were to be tried in any country for fairness, i wish it would be in the us
