I don't sleep well and also live on my own. I get up most days around 4am. That Sunday morning was no different, I had made my coffee sat down put the telly on just as a bulliten came to say Diana had been in a car crash and was seriously injured and been taken to a Paris hospital. About 10 minutes later the annoucer changed to a man dressed in a black suit and black dickie bow tie....I knew what he was going to say by his dress.
The feeling of lonilness had never affected me before although I had only been alone for a couple of years then....but it being so early I would not ring anyone t tell them as I did not think it fair...so I sat on my own for another 3 hours watching the tradegy enfold before ringing my daughter.

I was in Malta. There is a big connection with Britain there because of the war. The whole place went into mourning.
I was no fan of the royal family and had quite a job making sure my 4 year old son still had a good holiday.

The day of the funeral we had a free run of the beach, which was great.

I still remember the flack Princess Diana's was getting up to her death, from all quarters of British society...so I viewed the hypocrisy of the mass grief then with pretty much the same distaste as I view it today.

After this Queen has gone, I think it will be time to just draw the curtains on the whole royal family nonsense.

backpacking on the Chinese Vietnamese border. Didn't see a news service for three days. BTW it is 'Diana, Princess of Wales', not 'Princess Diana'.

In my flat in Torrevieja, Spain on holiday. Strangely enough, I was also there when the announcement of Diana and Charles separating was made, and worse, when the twin towers were destroyed. Get worried now about what other news will emerge when I am there.

I was in Paris that morning and a friend came around for lunch. When she arrived, she asked if I had heard the news. She said she was in a cab very much earlier in the morning (like 3am or something) and the news was spreading all over the cab drivers' network via radio. I then turned on the TV in disbelief.

Honestly? on the loo (WC). I'd woken soon after 4am and switched on the BBC World Service while I had a pee break. Probably one of the first people in UK to hear about it.

I worked near Kensington Gardens and visited the "shrine" set up outside. Weirdest experience of my life.
