The Unbearable Lightness of Being is probably the best starting point, as its a really strong introduction to how he writes... and it's pretty good. The Book of Laughter and Forgetting would probably best be put on hold unless you're already familiar with Kundera or the realm of metafiction (it lacks Lightness's linear, single story), and The Joke is a "regular" novel and not an indicator of the writer he later became. The Unbearable Lightness of Being will be the popular choice as its the one that most people have read and that he is known for, but it's also probably the best one to start with as well. My personal favorite was The Joke, but, like I said, it's not exactly Kunderesque as the others all are.

I have read his two most famous books and recommend them both.

The Unbearable Lightness of being is an amazing story that makes you think about life and relationships

The Book of Laughter and Forgetting is also philosphical but much more about living under communism and has lots of ideas it in it that I loved.

Enjoy.

His books are all very challenging but I would recommend 'The Unbearable Lightness Of Being' as a place to start because it is so very clever.
