I mean, Florida got hit 3 times in one year and no one demanded cards. Colorado got hit hard with some crazy snowstorms this year too, what gives? If an earthquake knocks down my home, should I demand $2000 or say the administration is racist?

Perhaps the Administration was slow to react, but the Federal Gov't always does things after local and state gov't does. Mayor Nagin was far worse in my opinion, and hardly a word, the guy even got re-elected.

I believe that Visa Check card program was being run by the American Red Cross. In either case you would have been better flushing that $2000 down the crapper. Most of it ended up buying crack cocaine, I Pods etc. What a waste. They should have given that money to NimRod Mayor Ray Nagin so he could put it towards starting those 1000 school buses he never used. They are all water logged now.

The American Red Cross did deliver those cards to shelter managers (I was one of them that did it). Those cards were a fast way to help people in need real fast-no names were on the cards so anyone could use them-the Red Cross is not to blame for that over sight. A few of the shelter managers pocketed the cards for themselves-most finally got caught. Cards were used for other then what they were intended for and a lot were stolen. The whole project was a nightmare.
This was a knee jerk reaction to a horrid disaster. No one had ever been faced with what happened in the Gulf Coast region-it looked like a war zone without the bullets- a few bodies were found with bullet holes in them though.
All the folks that came there to help did their best and they came from around the world.

Good point but try to remember that not everyone got the pay check cards. Katrina victims were the experiment for the new system and they screwed it up. Now they'll go back to the old voucher system they had before.

And yes I'm saying something was in place before Katrina. There were people at shelters handing out applications for assistance after Andrew destroyed southern Florida. The money however doesn't last forever. Depending on the rebuild process your assistance usually will run out before your life.

The administering of the check cards was the current administration's backward response to a natural disaster. The admin. was called racist because of its lack of a timely response to the disaster and its overall handling of the disaster. True enough there have been many other natural disasters in the US however the response from the government was swift and reasonable, not so in the case of hurricane K. Furthermore, it was not only blacks and liberals that denounced the admin. but many foreign nations took note of the natl gov'ts response, or more appropriately its lack there of, to K as well.
