Two reasons:
1) A lot of the law is based on morality, and as such having sex with an immediate blood family member was considered immoral! I think it originally started with your mother or father, and somewhere down the line they included siblings.
2) Genetics...Try reading some of the other answers, unless you have got six fingers on each hand and webbed feet, which might explain your question!

it illegal for two reasons.
The first is the risk of abuse, a father sleeping with his daughter.. well you can guess what might be happeneing there.
THe second is that all sex carries a risk of pregnancy and a baby produced from two people with very similar genetic material is more than likely to have douvle versions of genes that someone i the family may carry one of.
For example, if two siblings carry one copy of the gene for cystic fibrosis, then any baby that they produce have a 50/50 chance of carrying one version of the gene and a 1/4 chance of the disease. Whereas in the community it is estimated that one in 21 people carry the gene and there is a much smaller chance of a baby with the disease.

It is illegal in the human world for the same reasons as why it happens so infrequently in the animal world- inbreeding causes birth defects which puts the species at risk. Mutantions occur, which would eventually weaken the gene pool.
Thank goodness, most of us don't need a law passed in parliament to know that it is unthinkable and repulsive.

Excuse me ! but are you for real or what? i cant believe this question you have put on here, It is illegal to have sex with immediate family and siblings because it is classed as INCEST! this is not normal.
Besides children conceived can develop problems if families have certain health problems. I WOULD DEFINITELY NOT RECOMMEND THIS WHATSOEVER!
Why on earth would people want to shag their family members there are plenty of people out there - who are not !

That is a very strange question to ask, if you are having feelings which make you need to know this then maybe you need to speak to a proffessional about it as it is not generally accepted as a sound way of thinking.
Other than that, it significantly increases the risk of some major birth defects.

Because it produces genetic and birth defects, producing offspring with retardation and physical defects. Also, and far worse, it is traumatic and psychologically damaging to persons to be sexually abused by their immediate family. That's why all codified religions (those with some sort of written scriptures) condemn incest as one of the worst sins.

Its a law handed down through the ages which is actually based on bitter experience. In-breeding leads to mutants: simple as that. The more in-breeding you have, the less genetic diversity you have & so the population weakens.

cos of inter breeding and recking your dna you will be making some poor girl bring up a spastic baby or at least a baby that has something wrong with them...i know its awfull to say it but thats how it is..the royal family have a lot of interbreeding and they have had problems with some of there off spring q vic had six fingers and the current queens sister or daughter is a mongel or something and is locked away as not to embares the family also jew interbreed a lot and a lot of them have blood disorders and weak dna thats why there is known deseases that only effect jews. plus its also very sick to sleep with your sister or brother or mum an dad.

I am sure you don't want to, but why would you want to have sex with say your mum or sister, just if they were to get pregnant, the poor kid would abuse at school and through out its life, and your wouldn't be sweet either.
